— SHIPSHEWANA — In the short span of two hours more than 175 children passed through the third floor of the Davis Building in Shipshewana.

It was the first two hours of “Kids Christmas” activities sponsored by many of the stores belonging to the Shipshewana Retail Merchants.

The children had “passports” and a map of all the fun, free activities at each Christmas port-of-call around town.

Each stop offered a free fun event, a snack, a ride on the carousel, a puppet show or a Christmas craft.

Matt and Jessica Payne drove down from Union City, Mich., with two other families to enjoy the day. Their 4-year-old son Micah was ready to join in everything that was going on. He and his older brother Malachai steered their parents to and from all the activity stops.

“This is our second Christmas visit specifically for this event,” Jessica said. “We think it is wonderful and the fact that it is free, makes it even more special.

Not every family has a lot of money to spend. This is a nice day for all the children. They are so wound up.”
