Two-vehicle crash kills mo-ped rider

GOSHEN — A head-on, two-vehicle crash in Benton Township killed a mo-ped rider Monday night.

Dead is Jeremy Yates, 20, Nappanee.

Elkhart County police said the crash occurred at 6:47 p.m. on C.R. 50 east of C.R. 35. A 2005 Jeep Liberty was headed west on C.R. 50 when the driver passed a horse-drawn vehicle.

The Jeep then collided head-on with Yate’s mo-ped. Yates was ejected, and the mo-ped was broken into multiple pieces. Police said Yates was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three passengers in the Jeep were injured. Police said William Perry, 20, Goshen, suffered a head injury and lacerations. Randall Purtell, 20, Milford, suffered head and back injuries, and Melissa Yoder, Ligonier, 28, had upper back pain. All three were airlifted to a hospital; police indicated the passengers’ injuries were not life-threatening.

Police haven’t determined the driver of the Jeep.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
