GOSHEN — Jurors in Elkhart Circuit Court Tuesday heard opening statements and testimony in the felony murder trial of Blake Layman, Levi Sparks and Anthony Perez Sharp.

The three have been charged in connection with a botched Elkhart burglary that resulted in the shooting death of Danzele Johnson, 21, Goshen, by homeowner Rodney Scott last October.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Vicki Becker outlined what investigators say took place before, during and after Johnson’s shooting. Defense attorneys said the intruders thought no one was home at the Scott residence before the break-in.

Becker told jurors they can expect to hear testimony from Jose Quiroz, who late last year pleaded guilty to his involvement in the crime.

The trial continues today. Read more in Wednesday's edition of The Goshen News.
