Ligonier baby killed in Saturday morning crash

LIGONIER — An 8-month-old boy was killed in a one-vehicle crash Saturday morning at the Noble and Elkhart County line.

Dead is Gael Ibarra of Ligonier.

The collision occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Noble County Road 900 North. Angelica Ibarra, 39, Ligonier, was driving west in a 2000 Pontiac Montana. The vehicle went straight through a curve, slid sideways and struck a tree.

Police said Gael Ibarra, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead as a result of his crash injuries. Four other children who were passengers in the vehicle were also hurt.

Jose Ibarra, 9, suffered head injuries when he was ejected from the Pontiac. He was transported to Parkview Regional Hospital. Also taken to the hospital were Erika Ibarra, 10, who suffered facial injuries; Ivan Ibarra, 8, who suffered stomach injuries; and Gerardo Ibarra, 14, who had neck pain. All the children are from Ligonier.

Noble County police said Ibarra was cited for driving while never being licensed and driving too fast to avoid a crash, along with child seat violations.

Angelica Ibarra told police that prior to the crash, an animal ran into the path of her vehicle.
