No increase in wheel tax for LaGrange County

THE GOSHEN NEWS

— The wheel tax and surcharge tax increase thought to be headed for LaGrange County residents is not going to happen. The state had originally announced a reduction in revenue for all counties that did not charge their residents the maximum allowable tax.

Currently LaGrange charges 2 percent and would have had to raise it to 10 percent to maintain its fair share of revenue from the state. The revenue generated from these two taxes will bring in an estimated $620,000 for 2014. Commission president Jac Price announced the change at the commissioner’s Monday meeting in LaGrange.

Zoning update

In other business, Bob Shanahan, zoning administrator for LaGrange County, submitted for approval his re-write and update of the rules and regulations for the planning commission and zoning board. He went through each change item by item for those assembled. As a part of his housekeeping for 2013, he also announced the formation of an executive board for the planning commission. The members will be Rex Pranger, Dalonda Young, Steve Engleking, with Commissioner Larry Miller serving as alternate.

Shanahan said this board will relieve the residents of having to present any changes to already existing site plans before the entire board. This executive board addresses only changes that are already in compliance with the original “approved” plans. By expediting this process a plan can proceed on schedule without adding the extra step of having to be reviewed and again approved before the entire planning commission. Shanahan says it will shorten the turn-around time for a project by weeks.

YMCA coming

The county commissioners gave consent to a lease with Cole YMCA out of Kendallville in cooperation with the Parkview LaGrange Foundation to operate an exercise program open to all county residents. It will be located in the old ambulance building near the town offices. A memorandum of understanding has been issued so the county will be free of any liability with the building. The exercise classes will be part-time for now, a begin date was not mentioned.

Shell Building

A joint meeting between the commissioners and the county council has been called for Monday at 9 a.m. or immediately following the commissioners meeting. The only issue to be addressed is the proposed “shell” building project, at Fawn River Crossing, presented by the LaGrange County EDC earlier this year. The straightening of C.R. 200 North will not be addressed at this meeting.
