Two children injured in fire

ELKHART — A 9-year-old girl suffered second and third degree burns to her face, hands and chest when a house caught fire in Concord Township Saturday night.

A 7-year-old boy suffered first degree burns to his arm.

The blaze broke out at 9:58 p.m. in the 22900 block of Leslie Lane, just off of Old U.S. 20, according to Concord Township Deputy Fire Chief Don Mansell.

Mansell said the two children were not part of the family of four at home at the time of the fire, which included two parents and two teenage boys. The children were members of the same church, Mansell added.

The girl was flown by MedFlight to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and the boy was transported to Elkhart General Hospital.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in approximately 15 to 20 minutes, Mansell said.

“There was a lot of storage stuff in the bedroom/storage room above the garage and there were a lot of hot spots to put out,” the fire chief said.

Mansell estimates the damage to the two-story house at $110,000 to $115,000, with the second floor above the garage sustaining substantial heat and smoke damage along with the family’s belongings.

“The whole upstairs and garage will have to be gutted,” he said. “Downstairs was pretty much untouched.”

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Mansell said it started in a room above the garage. It is believed the two children were inside that room.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
