Goshen football coach Cheviron tells team he'll resign

GOSHEN — The Mike Cheviron era at Goshen High School football has come to an end after just three years.

Cheviron, who had guided the Redskins since 2011, has informed school officials of his intention to resign as head football coach and reportedly informed the team of his decision on Monday.

Goshen Community Schools Superintendent Diane Woodworth confirmed Monday night that Cheviron has told school officials of his intention to resign.

“He told the team today after school that he will be turning in his resignation letter,” Woodworth said. “He has not turned it in yet, but apparently, that is his intention.”

Cheviron said Monday that last Friday night’s sectional loss to Elkhart Central — which sealed an 0-10 campaign for Goshen, the second winless season since 2004 — was the tipping point.

“This is a tough community,” Cheviron said. “You have to win, and you certainly can’t go 0-10.”

Cheviron said he had wanted to remain as coach, but community pressure ultimately made that impossible.

“The community doesn’t want me,” Chevron said. “I don’t feel like they really gave me a chance … It’s just tough ... Maybe they’ll do that for the next guy.”

Cheviron said he plans to keep his position teaching physics at GHS for now.

Cheviron was 6-25 in three seasons in Goshen. The Redskins were 4-7 in 2011, including an overtime sectional quarterfinal win over LaPorte at home; 2-8 in 2012; and 0-10 this season.

Cheviron was the sixth coach at Goshen since 2002. He replaced Dave Wilson, who coached from 2008-10.
