Long-time Falcon volleyball coach steps down

BENTON — Expressing her desire to do something else Carla Herschberger has submitted her resignation as Fairfield High School girls volleyball coach.

The move comes two days after the Falcons’ season ended with a loss to Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran Tuesday evening in a Class 3A regional championship match.

“My every waking moment is filled with volleyball,” the coach said. “At this point in my life it’s time to do something else. I want to leave the sport while my passion for volleyball is still there.”

Fairfield finished with a 29-8 record this season, giving Herschberger a noteworthy mark of 390-80 in her 13 seasons at the school. Her overall record includes three seasons at Westview is 455-1115.

Herschberger guided the Falcons to sectional championships the last 10 straight seasons. Fairfield was a state finalist six times in her tenure and twice (2006 and 2010) were the runner-up in Class 2A to perennial state powerhouse Muncie Burris.

Herschberger is a 1979 graduate of Caston High School and a graduate of Manchester College.

Last weekend (July 12) the Goshen Parks Department held its Kid’s Try-athlon to promote childhood fitness and this week (July 18) the new bicycle trail is open to the fairgrounds in Goshen, offering residents a healthy way to get to the annual agriculture exposition.
