Inspiration on a deadline

‘24/7’ plays to be staged Saturday in Goshen

GOSHEN — What do you get when you lock playwrights, directors and actors in a room, throw in some coffee and give them 24 hours?

The goal is to get seven short one-act plays, according to Adrienne Nesbitt, artistic director for New World Arts.

The NWA crew will host the “24/7” event Saturday for the public, but the real work for the event begins Friday at 11 p.m., when seven writers will be locked in with coffee and some sort of writing criteria which will be kept secret until that time, Nesbitt said.

“They’ll write through the night, and have some sort of writers’ workshop around 3 a.m.,” she said.

Nesbitt herself will read through the plays around 7 a.m., making edits and assigning directors and actors.

Directors start their day at 9 a.m., blocking and reading, and actors arrive at 10 a.m. to begin memorization. Performances begin at 9 p.m. — a whirlwind day, according to Nesbitt.

“It’s a very concentrated theater experience,” Nesbitt said. “It’s very fun to be a part of. Sometimes people are too busy for a full theater production, so they can come in and work with this for just a day.”

Nesbitt said there has been a lot of buzz surrounding this 24/7 performance. While it’s not the first event of its kind hosted by NWA, it is the first one held outside of the Christmas season, and the first one to be strictly for an age 21-and-older audience. The event will be held at Ignition Garage, which is a larger venue than the NWA theater, Nesbitt said.

“This is the first time we’ve partnered with Ignition, and it’s something we’re hoping to continue,” she said. “It’s fun to mix it up and have a new venue.”

Tabi Berkey will direct one of the plays during the event. This is her third year doing the 24/7 program, and she said she’s excited to participate again.

“I enjoy getting to work the day with people I know and don’t know,” Berkey said. “It’s only a one-day commitment.”

The hardest part about the performance is getting her actors to have their lines fully memorized in the time before the play, Berkey said. However, the fun comes out through “inside jokes” in the plays themselves.

“It’s fun being on the inside,” Berkey said.

Nesbitt said the event is also serving as a fundraiser for NWA. Berkey said she hopes people come out to support the organization and arts in Goshen.

“I want people to come and enjoy the work that NWA does,” she said. “I want them to support this good part of the community.”

Even if people have never attended one of these events before, they will have fun, Nesbitt said.

“It’s one of those things that, even if you’re not a theater aficionado, it’s so much fun to watch,” Nesbitt said.

Tickets are on sale at www.newworldarts.org for $10, and they will also be available at the door for the same price.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
