Concord student wins scholastic chess title

DUNLAP — Joel Garcia, an eighth-grader at Concord Junior High School, has been named Elkhart County Scholastic Chess Champion.

Joel earned the title at the 27th annual Elkhart County Scholastic Chess Championships held at Elkhart Central High School on March 2. The event, co-sponsored by the Elkhart Central Chess Club and the Elkhart County Chess Club, drew 67 entrants from around northern Indiana and Michigan.

Joel topped the combined championship and reserve sections with four wins and a draw, while third-grade home-schooled student Azariah Price of Union, Mich., finished first among reserve players by winning three, drawing one and losing one.

Ryan Wider, a sophomore at Elkhart Memorial High School, had the only perfect score in the novice section, winning all six of his games.

The second annual Elkhart County Adult Open was held concurrently. U.S. Chess Federation Master Dennis Monokroussos swept the 14-player event with four wins.
