Shipshe Event Center receives AED

SHIPSHEWANA — Visitors and staff at the Shipshewana Event Center and Hostetler’s Hudson Museum will have a little extra backup in case of emergency thanks to an automated external defibrillator that is now available on site.

In an emergency, when someone is having a heart attack, the AED allows even a lay person to take immediate action, talking the rescuer through each step of its use, according to Parkview LaGrange Hospital officials. The unit provides the intervention needed to restart a person’s heart even before the ambulance arrives. The AED, along with training on its use supplied by Parkview LaGrange EMS staff, is a gift funded by Parkview LaGrange Hospital’s Community Health Improvement program.

For Shipshewana Town Manager Mike Sutter, having this potentially life-saving equipment available carries special meaning. Sutter’s family has a long history of heart disease and he himself had a heart attack at the young age of 38.

“I’ve learned from personal experience how important each minute can be when someone is having a heart attack. It can make the difference between life and death,” Sutter said. “Knowing the equipment is within easy reach if one of our guests or staff members should have a problem is very important.”

“We are very happy to be able to provide the Event Center with the AED equipment and training,” said Rob Myers, president of Parkview LaGrange Hospital. “We are very committed to doing what we can to help improve the health and safety of the people who live in or visit our communities.”

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
