Riegsecker Marketplace buys water park, inn

SHIPSHEWANA —  Riegsecker Marketplace, parent company of The Blue Gate Restaurant Bakery and Theater, will purchase the Amish Country Inn Hotel and Wana Waves Water Park, 800 S. Van Buren St.

Andy Rohrer, Riegsecker’s director of marketing, said the company has a purchase agreement for the property and closure of the deal is expected by the end of May.

The 154-room inn and 26,000-square-foot water park was built in 2006 by Focus Development and has been operated by the company since then.

“An upscale hotel has been a part of our company’s vision for quite some time. We planned on building a lodging facility as a complement and extension to our restaurant, theater, and retail stores, and this opportunity matched our goals without adding more rooms to Shipshewana’s five existing hotels,” said Marketplace President Ryan Riegsecker.

The hotel will be rebranded as the Blue Gate Garden Inn and will offer all of the amenities of a full service hotel, including standard rooms, multiple room suites, adjoining rooms, wireless Internet, exercise room, gathering and recreation areas and free continental breakfast.

The Wana Waves water park that is attached to the hotel will be closed as part of the purchase agreement between the companies. “We feel that to better fit the needs of the hotel’s visitor, transforming that area into a different type of hotel amenity instead of a paid attraction will be more beneficial,” Riegsecker said.

In the meantime, the hotel will be in full operation.

Focus had also operated the adjacent Town Centre, a small convention center that also houses the a museum for Hudson classic cars. But that agreement broke down and the town government now manages the center.

The Town Council also received a portion of every water park ticket sale to help finance the Town Centre, according to Town Clerk Ruth Ann Downey. Focus paid the town $55,257 in March for the July through December 2012 ticket agreement.

The Riegsecker Marketplace family of companies include The Blue Gate Restaurant and Bakery, Blue Gate Theater, The Shipshewana Furniture Co., The Craft Barn, The Hitching Post Toy Store and Frozen Yogurt Shoppe, Riegsecker Cabinet Co. and Riegsecker Carriage.

Reservations at the hotel can be made by calling 260-768-7688 or using the current website online at http://www.AmishCountryInn.net

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
