Elkhart County museum hires new curator of education

BRISTOL — Patrick McGuire has been hired as the new curator of education at the Elkhart County Historical Museum.

Before coming to the Elkhart County historical museum, McGuire received a history degree from Monmouth College and a graduate degree in historical administration from Eastern Illinois University.

“I took what I learned as a student and developed an interest in museums by working in museum education and collections at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, Naper Settlement, Historic Wagner Farm, and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association in Illinois.”

McGuire replaces long time curator of education Rebecca Oestreich, who accepted a job in her home state of Minnesota with the Department of Natural Resources in July.

McGuire will work closely with the Elkhart County Historical Society to manage the museum’s educational offerings for all ages.

“As the curator of education, I want to develop an educational plan for the museum that will highlight the objects in the museum’s collection and tell the story of Elkhart County and its people. We will develop programs, events, and exhibits for the museum that are meaningful, engaging, and entertaining for museum visitors,” McGuire said.

The Elkhart County Parks Department maintains numerous historic resources including historic canals, Bonneyville Mill and the County Home Cemetery. Along with providing educational opportunities built around the Elkhart County Historical Society’s collection, McGuire hopes to help create programs and events that interpret cultural resources within the Elkhart County Parks and throughout Elkhart County.

McGuire is the third new staff member the museum has hired in the last two-years who has a strong academic and professional background in the museum field.

The museum’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. There is no charge for admission, but donations are accepted. For more information, visit www.elkhartcountyhistory.org. The museum is located at 304 W. Vistula (Ind. 120) in Bristol.
