Mayor Allan Kauffman said Friday the Goshen City Council will not be meeting Monday and will instead tackle the issue of council redistricting at the group’s Wednesday meeting.
“My contacts at the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns have not been able to determine that a sanction is likely to be imposed for not passing redistricting ordinance by Dec. 31,” Kauffman said in an email to council members and the media Friday afternoon. “They’ve not heard of this happening, and don’t know what state office would impose the sanction if so inclined.”
State statute states the new districts must be approved by Dec. 31, but no one on city staff had been able to locate what sanctions would be imposed should this not happen. The final decision on the city’s council districts was tabled at Thursday’s special City Council meeting after the council members failed to reach a decision.
