County historical museum to recognize Civil War anniversary

The Elkhart County Historical Museum will be recognizing the 150th anniversary of the Civil War July 5 with a one-day only event.

Throughout the day the museum will display selected items from the collection of noted topographer Ambrose Bierce. “During the War, Bierce served as a topographical engineer,” said Elkhart County Historical Museum Curator of Education Patrick McGuire. “He created detailed maps, and would later gain notoriety as a writer, but his maps were important for the Union forces.” The maps will be displayed in the Corson Library.

Also during the day at 1 p.m. there will be a half hour presentation by McGuire and former school teacher and Elkhart County Historian Marcia Brenneman. The presentation will cover Indiana’s and Elkhart County’s involvement in the Civil War. After the presentation, there will be a short session for discussion where visitors can share their knowledge of Elkhart County’s contribution in the war.

The Elkhart County Historical Museum fosters appreciation and preservation of local history and culture through exhibits, educational programs and an accessible library and archives. The museum operates as a partnership between the Elkhart County Parks Department and the Elkhart County Historical Society.

The museum’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. There is no charge for admission, but donations are accepted. For more information, visit http://www.elkhartcountyhistory.org. The museum is located at 304 W. Vistula (Ind. 120) in Bristol.

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
