Concert series to benefit ministry

LaGRANGE —  It is summer and time for outdoor music. It is also the beginning of First Fridays — a concert series hosted by the local community ministry, Reason 4 Hope.

On June 7, Sodium For Him, a local four-piece band consisting of musicians from Stroh and Fort Wayne, played their music. They entertained the crowd from their stage under the LaGrange courthouse gazebo, surrounded by blankets, parked cars and scampering children.

Across the street, in the storefront of the LaGrange Christian Fellowship, volunteers were serving snacks and beverages to the evening pedestrians enjoying the music. Besides the First Friday series, Reason 4 Hope also serves food and fellowship in that same storefront every Thursday afternoon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are staffed by volunteers and their food and drink is donated by local people, businesses, foundation grants and churches.

Their next scheduled First Friday evening program will be July 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. In the meantime, their summer Block Party series is set for July and August. To run all of these programs, Reason 4 Hope needs monetary and volunteer support. Block party volunteers serve food, set up and clean up, hand out school supplies, play games or face paint with kids. They need 10 volunteers for each event. People of all ages and denominations are invited to volunteer.

To volunteer or donate, email them at info@thereason4hope.com; call Jamelle at 260-499-0909 or Holly at 574-850-4101. To donate food, notebooks, school supplies and or money, contact the group by mail at P.O. Box 174 Howe, IN 46746 or go to its website: http://www.thereason4hope.com/donate.

Poll

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
