A STAFF REPORT
THE GOSHEN NEWS
Goshen Public Library Board members Tuesday officially released changes to the library’s open hours. The changes are scheduled to take effect Sept. 4.
The new library hours are as follows:
• Mondays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Tuesdays, 1 to 8 p.m.
• Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. However, the library will be closed on Sundays Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The move follows a public hearing held by the board on Aug. 21 in which community members were asked to provide input on a Library Board Public Services Committee proposal to reduce and change open hours.
According to the committee, library open hours needed to be reduced because of ongoing financial constraints related to declining tax revenues.
According to library officials, input received in support of the proposal primarily indicated the new library schedule should continue to place a strong emphasis on maintaining — and even slightly expanding — weekend open hours.
Officials said that for those voicing opposition to the proposed changes, concern focused primarily on the recommendation to postpone Monday openings until 1 p.m. Concern was expressed by some parents of very young children who attend the library’s Monday morning Mother Goose Lapsit Storytime.
In the end, board members decided to modify the original proposal by shifting the weekday morning closure to Tuesday mornings instead of Monday mornings.
