NEW PARIS —
Elkhart County police are looking for two men who robbed an elderly couple south of New Paris Monday night. An 82-year-old man was severely beaten during the robbery, a family member told The Goshen News.
The robbery occurred around 9:40 p.m. at a home in the 71000 block of Ind. 15. Two men forced their way into the residence, home to an 82-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman. Police said the robbers struck the man with a metal object and took money, guns and electronics from the residence.
The robbers were described as two tall, slender black males, possibly around 40 years old.
The 82-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police reported.
The couple is the aunt and uncle of Clearwater, Fla., resident Rick Brennan who said his uncle was severely beaten with a tire iron during the robbery, and suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck and a possible broken wrist. He indicated his uncle was due to be discharged today from IU Health Goshen Hospital.
Brennan also wants to set up a reward fund, the goal being to turn up information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people who robbed his aunt and uncle.
“I will contribute $1,000 cash myself,” he said. Brennan hopes other people will contribute to the fund.
Police ask anyone with information about the crime or the robbers involved to call the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department at 574-533-4151.
