Plane makes emergency landing near Elkhart

Today at approximately 11:15am, Elkhart County Sheriff's Deputies were called to investigate the report of an aircraft that had made a landing in a field west of the city limits of Elkhart.

A Piper PA-12 airplane made a landing in a field north of CR 12 and east of Ash Rd. after experiencing engine failure and not having enough power to make it to the airport.

There was no damage to the airplane or the field. The pilot, Stacy Jo Lutes, 32, of Shipshewana and a passenger did not suffer any injuries.

The incident is still under investigation and will be under review by the FAA.

Last weekend (July 12) the Goshen Parks Department held its Kid’s Try-athlon to promote childhood fitness and this week (July 18) the new bicycle trail is open to the fairgrounds in Goshen, offering residents a healthy way to get to the annual agriculture exposition.
