GOSHEN SCHOOL BOARD: Plans continue for new community aquatics, wellness center

GOSHEN — Plans are continuing to move forward for a new community aquatics and wellness center in Goshen.

News of the ongoing plans was presented during a meeting of the Goshen Board of School Trustees Monday evening.

In discussing the current phase of the proposal, Goshen Community Schools Superintendent Diane Woodworth indicated that Dan Rawlins of the Indianapolis-based architectural development firm InterDesign was in Goshen for two full days in October. InterDesign is the firm hired by the board during their Sept. 24 meeting to look into the feasibility of constructing the new aquatics and wellness center. A referendum seeking funding support for the project from the community is planned for May of next year.

During his time in Goshen, Rawlins reportedly met with Goshen Community Center Inc. board members, GSI (Goshen Swimming Inc.) representatives, community members and GCS staff members regarding the proposed use of spaces in the community center as well as in reclaimed pool spaces at Goshen High School and Goshen Middle School.

“These conversations revolved around what people believe the needs of these spaces will be,” Woodworth said. “Dan will be reporting back by the end of November about the results of his meetings and share updated cost estimates for these spaces.”

In the meantime, Woodworth noted that beginning in December, project representatives Wayne Kramer and Bruce Stahly will begin hosting focus/discussion groups with various members of the community to discuss the proposed center.

Four groups are currently planned at this time: business leaders; neighborhood association representatives; community opinion leaders; and the general public.

“The purpose of these groups is to ask questions of the group as well as to listen to the questions and concerns the group members might have about the proposed community center,” Woodworth said. “The results of these conversations will help to provide direction for the campaign and public relations strategies for this proposal.”

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
