Four Elkhart County residents selected to play at Purdue University in March

LAFAYETTE — Four Elkhart County students earned the opportunity to perform in the Indiana Bandmasters Association’s 53rd Annual All-State Band March 8-10 at Purdue University.

Concord High School seniors Jack Hinkle and Caitlin Machek, Northridge High School junior Sam Meier and Elkhart Central junior Carol Weirich all auditioned for a spot in the 82-piece band in January.

They were among 750 students who auditioned at nine locations across the state. After auditioning, a selection committee reviewed each recording and recommended students for the All-State Band or the 83-piece All-State Honor Band. Fifty-four high schools will be represented in the two bands.

Hinkle plays trumpet; Machek, clarinet; Meier, bass clarinet; and Weirich, French horn.

Ball State University Professor Tom Caneva will direct the All-State Band and Paul Popiel from the University of Kansas will conduct the Honor Band.

Students received five musical selections ahead of time and will then spend Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, rehearsing for a 2:30 Sunday afternoon March 10 performance at the Elliott Hall of Music on the Purdue University campus. The concert is free and is open to the public.

Penn High School students Sara Eveler and Joel Doenges were also selected to participate in the All-State Band.

Kenten Leidy, Braeden Leidy, Anita Hsu and John Kim, all Penn High School students, will play for the Honor Band.
