Goshen to get new water meters

GOSHEN — Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety members Monday voted to approve a contract of up to $5,000 with Goshen Plumbing and Heating for the replacement of obsolete water meters.

According to the contract, numerous water meters located in homes across the Goshen area have been found to be vertical rather than horizontal, something that has been shown to significantly shorten the lives of the meters.

Keitha Windsor, contract and claims manager for the city, indicated that it is the city administration’s desire to contract with Goshen Plumbing and Heating Co. Inc. in order to get the obsolete meters swapped out and install new, longer-lasting city supplied water meters.

“Compensation is based on the contractor’s licensed plumber hourly rate of $65 per hour,” Windsor said. “The estimated average cost per conversion and installation is $100, and the total cost for all work shall not exceed $5,000.”

According to the contract, approximately 3,000 obsolete water meters will need to be swapped out. A deadline for completion of the project has been set for Dec. 31, 2013.

License requests

In other action, board members approved an electrical license and two mechanical licenses.

Steven W. Arnold of L-A Electric, 3019 Mariposa Place, Fort Wayne, met the requirements for a Goshen electrical license by achieving a score of 80 percent on the master electrical exam.

Michael L. Ritter Jr. of Great Lakes Heating, Air Conditioning and Electrical Inc., 22189 Ind. 23, South Bend, and Chris Anderson of North Central Mechanical Inc., 1721 N. Cedar St., Mishawaka, each met the requirements for a city mechanical license. Each achieved a score of 78 percent on the master mechanical exam.

Central garage expansion

The Goshen Engineering Department received permission from the board to advertise for bids for the Central Garage expansion project. Bids for the project will be due Feb. 11. All necessary funds have been appropriated and are available for the project.

Synergy RV Transport

Board members approved a post-construction plan submitted by the developer of Synergy RV Transport that brings the company in compliance with Ordinance 4329, Uniform Requirements for Post-Construction Stormwater Management. The Goshen Stormwater Department also requested that the Stormwater Board accept the plan.

Phillips 66

A $37,000 project involving the installation of water and sanitary sewer by the Phillips 66 convenience store, 915 Kercher Road, was determined by the board to have been satisfactorily completed and accepted for maintenance. In addition, a three-year maintenance bond for the project, valued at 10 percent of the total construction cost, was also accepted by the board.
