NAPPANEE — Minor injuries sent several victims to local hospitals following a 12-vehicle pile up along Ind. 19 near Nappanee Thursday afternoon.
According to Elkhart County Capt. Jim Bradberry, the crashes began at about 2:21 p.m. along Ind. 19, near C.R. 48. Bradberry said officers think at this point that the pileup was caused by white out conditions with the blowing snow.
David Cox, of Columbia City, was among the uninjured motorists in the pileup. He also said there was blowing snow and white out conditions. His vehicle was off the east side of the road and was struck by about six other vehicles, he said. Neither he nor his passengers were injured.
Police are busy cleaning up the scene and caution travelers to avoid the area.
Several of the wrecked vehicles are being deposited in the parking lot at Nappanee Missionary Church.
We'll have more information on the pileup as it becomes available.
