THE GOSHEN NEWS
More than a dozen local merchants donated prizes to the Teen and Adult Summer Reading Program at the Nappanee Public Library in June and July, giving the Nappanee community some enticing incentives to boost their reading habits this summer.
Forty-five participants read 473 books and entered to win the following prizes (winners are listed in parentheses): Gift certificates from Polka Dot Bowtique (Allison Holdeman and Anthony Willman), Hex Bugs from Radio Shack (Bonnie Hochstetler, Alexis Vargo, Chris Plebanski and Wendi Replogle), oil changes from Persing Tire & Lube (Ella Sherlock and Lorena Diaz), a gift certificate from Rocket Science Ice Cream (Sue Ann Hershberger), one dozen doughnuts from Rise & Roll (Dacia Reid), gift certificates from Athens Gyro & Diner (Tina Green and Kenia Rodriguez), a gift certificate from John’s Butcher Shop (Chris Smith), a gift certificate from John’s Auto Spa (Lisa Orn), a Cross pen from Newcomer & Son Jewelers (Robyne Hakes), a gift certificate from Nang’s Chinese Restaurant (Stephanie Boggs), a gift certificate from Culinary Mill Market & Deli (Mason Gray), a foursome of golf from McCormick Golf Course (Cindi Umbaugh), an oil change and rotation from Newcomer Service (Dennis Hershberger), a clock radio from NPL (April Miller), a book bag from Demco (Eileen Mishler), a gift certificate from Martin Hardware (Deb Goodwin) and movie tokens from the Nappanee Theatre (Brittany Stubblefield).
Sixteen young readers in grades one through five were also matched up with teen and adult buddies for the annual “Reading Buddies” program, which runs simultaneously with the children’s reading program. The initiative gives kids the chance to practice and improve their reading skills over the summer simply by reading together once a week with a friendly mentor. Together, the buddies read 4,629 pages in 2,069 minutes.
“We are so grateful to have the merchant support for prizes for the Adult/Teen program,” said Adult Circulation Manager Pam Culp. “Our readers had fun ‘Shooting for the Stars’ to win, and it was exciting to see the Adult/Teen volunteers reading with the students all over the library. It helps keep the students sharp so they are ready to go back to school.”
