UPDATE: Cause of Elkhart Township house fire undetermined

GOSHEN — No cause has been determined in the blaze firefighters say heavily damaged a home northeast of Goshen Friday night.

Firefighters from Elkhart, Jefferson, Clinton and Concord townships battled the blaze at the home of Roelf Kuitse, 18280 Buckridge Court. Kuitse discovered the fire when he arrived home from work. The fire was called in to emergency dispatchers at 6:16 p.m.

Doug Gadson of the Elkhart Township Fire Department said firefighters were at the scene until 3:13 or 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning. He said the fire at the Kuitse home rekindled at around 7 a.m. Saturday and again around 10:43 p.m.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Gadson indicated Monday the extent of the damage at the home is making it difficult to get in and investigate. Elkhart Township Fire Chief Ryan Rheinheimer said heavy equipment will be brought in this week to sift through the debris.

Rheinheimer also said that in all of his years of firefighting, he’s never had a homeowner think about shutting the gas off, which Kuitse did.
