School board eyes summer projects

GOSHEN — The needs for Goshen Community Schools has been reviewed by school officials and a list has been made for potential summer projects.

“These are potential projects and the key word is potential,” said Jerry Hawkins, coordinator of business affairs during the school board meeting Monday evening.

“With the funding issues we are experiencing, we are doing everything we can to put priorities on the projects,” Hawkins said. “The severity of our needs has been a bit overwhelming. With the list of needs very large and the funding small we decided to prioritize the list by certain criteria.”

The first priority was the items that affect the safety of the students and the staff with the second priority being items related to potential water and weather damage. The third priority was the items that directly affect the instruction of the students, Hawkins added.

Several of the school buildings have repairs to brick mortar on the list and include Chandler, Waterford, West Goshen, and Goshen High School.

“We’ve walked the halls and walked around the buildings and one of major things we’ve looked at is the mason work and finding areas that are allowing water to get in our buildings and fixing those types of things and that’s always an issue,” Hawkins said.

Other high priorities include asphalt repairs and sealing cracks throughout the corporation and installing two kilns at the high school with proper venting. Some of the projects for technology include upgrade and add to the storage systems, implement a data warehouse increase the Internet bandwidth and prepare incoming freshmen laptops.

“We will complete them as funding and time allow,” he said.

In other business:

• The school board approved the Design Criteria Developer Services agreement with InterDesign of Indianapolis for the re-roof project this summer. The budget for the project is $465,000.

• The board approved a resolution in support of observing the Central Time Zone for all of Indiana. Three school boards in Knox County have collaborated in developing a resolution and requesting all Indiana school boards to adopt the resolution for several reasons, including the safety for students, funding, quality of education and split time zones in Indiana.

“I personally support it, to have more daylight in the morning hours,” Superintendent Diane Woodworth said.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
