COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Femi makes Sports Illustrated cameo

GOSHEN — Indiana University freshman soccer standout Femi Hollinger-Janzen made an appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated on March 25. The 2012 Bethany Christian High School graduate is believed to be only the third Elkhart County native to be on the cover of the national magazine.

Hollinger-Janzen is shown on the cover along with a group of IU athletes, including basketball star Victor Oladipo who is featured in the center of the photograph as part of SI’s preview coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Hollinger-Janzen can be seen in the lower right corner of the cover.

As a freshman for the Hoosiers, Hollinger-Janzen helped lead the IU men’s soccer team to the NCAA title back in December.

Goshen’s Rick Mirer was featured on the cover of SI on Sept. 24, 1990, as he scored a touchdown for Notre Dame against Michigan in his first collegiate start as quarterback.

Concord graduate Shawn Kemp also made a cameo appearance on a Sports Illustrated cover on May 8, 1995. The former NBA star for the Seattle Supersonics was shown defending against Los Angeles Lakers’ forward Vlade Divac during a playoff game.

Sophomore Brian Ulrich (Fairfield) fired a 72-70—142 total to capture medalist honors, leading the Bethel Pilots to the team championship in the University of Saint Francis Invitational on the 6,736-yard par 72 layout at Brookwood Golf Club near Fort Wayne. Senior Brady Klotz (NorthWood) was the runner-up to Ulrich with a 73-71—144.

The Pilots had a 292-296—588 team total.

“I’m very proud of this group and the way they’ve come out to compete this spring,” said Bethel Coach Chris Hess in a press release on the school’s Web site “We have a very talented roster and when these young men play with confidence, they can play with anybody – Drew Day proved that last week and Brian Ulrich showed the same this weekend. It’s been a process of patience for those two sophomores but they are showing now what we knew all along, that they are great players. The nice thing about this team is while you have the consistent great play of our anchor Brady Klotz, you have others stepping up everyday, including Ulrich and Day as well as Spencer Pannabecker and Taran Kennedy.”

Goshen College freshman Alejandro Genis (Elkhart Central) carded an 99-99-—176 good for 59th place among the individuals for Goshen.
