Train strikes, kills pedestrian

GOSHEN — A freight train struck and killed a pedestrian Sunday just north of downtown.

Emergency dispatchers were notified of the collision at 7:55 p.m.

Shortly after 8 p.m., Goshen police and emergency responders were at the scene near First Street and River Avenue. A body covered by a sheet lie underneath a stopped train.

“What happened?” a young voice called from the area of the nearby bicycle/pedestrian trail.

Karen Evans lives at the intersection of First and River. She said she came outside when she heard the commotion. Evans also said Sunday’s incident wasn’t the first train-related fatality in the neighborhood.

“We’ve had so many people around here killed off the tracks it’s not funny,” she said.

No more official information about Sunday’s fatal collision was available by The Goshen News’ presstime. Go online to www.goshennews.com and Facebook for updates.
