THE GOSHEN NEWS

GOSHEN —  A Goshen man was apprehended by police after driving into the millrace near the Douglas Street footbridge in Shanklin Park at 10:57 a.m. Thursday.

Marc Peterson, 63, 1101 W. Lincoln Ave., Goshen, reportedly told Goshen police he drove his 1996 Toyota Corolla along the foot path on the west bank of the millrace and then lost control of his vehicle and it went into the millrace.

Police said witnesses called 911 to report a car was driving along the footpath and then went into the water. Police said when they arrived they found Peterson on the west bank of the millrace and his car submerged. Peterson was taken to IU Goshen Health, according to police, for treatment of cuts and bruises. Police said he would be arrested on a felony charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Police also reported Peterson’s blood alcohol content was .211 percent.

Bulldog Towing, with the assistance of a diver from the Goshen police, removed the vehicle from the millrace. According to the release, the heath department was contacted and workers from that department went to the scene to determine if the submerged vehicle had caused any public health concerns. Police said there were no health or environmental issues as a result of the incident.
