Charges filed in ’08 armed robbery

GOSHEN — A Goshen man who allegedly helped rob an Amish man at gunpoint in 2008 has been charged with the crime.

Jesse A. Miller faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the Class B felony armed robbery count. In Elkhart Circuit Court Thursday, Judge Terry Shewmaker set an Oct. 21 trial date in the case, and appointed a public defender to represent Miller.

Authorities allege that Jesse Miller and his brother Devon robbed Howard Miller — no relation — at his home in November 2008.

According to charging information filed in the case, Howard Miller told police he was sleeping when he heard a knock at his door. When he went to the door, he was faced with a man brandishing a shotgun and demanding money. A flashlight strapped to the robber’s head was shining in Howard Miller’s face, according to the affidavit.

During the robbery, Howard Miller became aware that there were two men involved. Howard’s wife, Lillian, was home at the time as well.

The robbers made off with $21 and a wallet. Police later discovered that the cords to the community phone used by the Amish had been severed.

Elkhart County police exhausted all leads after the crime, and the case remained inactive until earlier this year. Court documents indicate Richard Miller told investigators that his sons, Jesse and Devon, committed the robbery.

Devon Miller had reportedly told a pastor about the crime he and his brother committed. According to the affidavit, Devon Miller also confessed to his father and the victims.

Devon Miller told his father he was wearing an “old man” Halloween mask during the robbery, the affidavit reads, and that Jesse was wearing fake glasses with a big fake nose. The brothers’ allegedly used their father’s shotgun.

Devon Miller was killed in a vehicle crash in October 2011.

Richard Miller told police his family knew Howard and Lillian Miller because the couple cared for Devon and Jesse when they were younger.

Elkhart County jail records and court documents alternately list a South Sixth Street and North 23rd Street address for Jesse Miller, who was incarcerated on a $75,000 bond Friday.
