First Elkhart River Festival Saturday

— GOSHEN — There’s a new festival highlighting the Elkhart River Saturday evening at the old Goshen Powerhouse.

The Elkhart River Festival will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. and is sponsored by the Elkhart River Restoration Association (ERRA).

“In my experience, people are quick to call the Elkhart River gross and dirty. Although it’s not the best condition, it has a lot to offer — as a beautiful recreational area, a vibrant ecosystem and a flood plain,” said Jake Miller, festival coordinator. “Many people seem to jump to their conclusions without any research or even visiting the river themselves. My goal is to raise awareness of how beautiful the Elkhart River is

Miller says the evening begins at 5 p.m. with a potluck dinner and participants are encouraged to bring a dish of food to share as well as their own table service.

After the meal, there will be a watershed demonstration, interactive dioramas, a river cleanup walk, and a lawn game involving strategy and tossing blocks for the first–time event.

“There will be educational input and it’ll cover a variety of topics related to the river,” Miller said. “We will be discussing the Elkhart River watershed, what it is and how to keep it healthy, fish populations and ecosystems, restoration strategies, and the communities role in the watershed’s health.”

Bands performing during the evening include Tom Adamson and the Texarkana Two (rock and roll from northwest Indiana); Moral Circus (Goshen College indie pop group); Lalo Cura (Spanish rock from Goshen); King Sadness (ambient shoegaze guitar); and CAZZ VI and the FRWAKS, members of Kansas Bible Company (garage rock from Goshen).

There’s a $10 suggested donation that covers a family or couple to raise money for the ERRA.

“Raising money is great, but our main goal is to raise awareness,” Miller said, “so people are encouraged to come whether they can donate or not. We want people to engage, learn and have fun together.”

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
