Fairfield principal takes job at alma mater

BENTON – Fairfield High School Principal Ben Tonagel will be leaving Fairfield to take over the same position at his alma mater, LaPorte High School.

The LaPorte school board officially approved his hiring Tuesday, according to Ramona Warg, in human resources for LaPorte Community School Corporation. He will start there July 1.

Fairfield Superintendent Steve Thalheimer said he expects to receive an official letter of resignation from Tonagel before Thursday’s Fairfield school board meeting, but had been aware that Tonagel was going through the interview process. Both Tonagel and his wife are originally from LaPorte and still have family there.

“I know LaPorte is his home and he has had his eye to go back there,” Thalheimer said. “Knowing how important his family is to him, I can’t fault him, but I regret we are losing a young, dynamic, fantastic administrator.”

Thalheimer said he is working with the school board to determine a plan to find Tonagel’s replacement.

Tonagel is replacing LaPorte Principal Greg Handel, who is retiring after 24 years, Warg said.

Tonagel could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
