Local designer lists tends for home decorating

— NAPPANEE — Wendy Lopez, home designer at L.J. Wagner Home Interiors in Nappanee, recently shared what she is seeing as popular trends in home décor.

“For upholstery in living room and family rooms neutrals are real popular,” she said. “The linen look and tweed fabrics and then adding pops of color with pillows and chairs.”

Shades of gray — warm grays in particular — are especially popular.

“But the colors that are being used with it tends to be brighter than what we’ve been used to seeing,” Lopez said.

Bright orange paired with gray also seem to be popular.

The global influence continues to be a major player, mainly in Ikat patterns and other global patterns in rugs and pillows. When it comes to rugs, natural fabrics are very popular — sea grass and jute rugs have been big, according to Lopez.

“It’s the textures, especially the natural textures,” she said, “that have been popular.”

Lopez said another way to add pops of color to a neutral room or a different element to a room is to add a fun, colorful lamp.

Another growing trend is industrial salvage and re-purposed items. For example, a lamp that looks like surveyor’s equipment or an industrial cart re-designed. Items that can be re-purposed and used in home décor.

Services

Lopez said L.J. Wagner’s offers comprehensive design services.

“We’ll go out to a home and help with furniture layout and suggest what might work in a room,” she said. “We’ll try to determine what style and look they want and find solutions that will work for the space and their lifestyle.”

Because L.J. Wagner’s has furniture, fabrics, paint, flooring, décor and even florals, “We can tie it all together,” Lopez said.

Lopez said they are willing to bring out a painting or other accessories to see if it will look good and, if not, they will bring it back to the store.

“Customers can look at it upon approval, without ever putting any money down,” she said. “It’s a service we offer.”

Summer décor

Changing your room’s décor and lightening it up for the summer is as easy as adding pillows in summer colors, fabrics or designs, switching out a throw and changing some accessories, Lopez said. Adding fresh flowers from your garden or a floral wreath to the front door is also a great idea.

“All those little things you do, the little details you change around that say ‘summer,’ ” Lopez said. “Little props and accessories you add — it doesn’t take a major overhaul.”
