Elkhart County under a flood warning

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a flood warning for Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall, St. Joseph, LaGrange, Noble, LaPorte and Starke counties in Indiana and Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties in Michigan.

The warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m. Friday

At 8:36 a.m., the National Weather Service doppler radar incidcated moderate to heavy rain falling over the warning area. Radar estimates that between 1/4 of an inch to 3/4 of an inch of rain has fallen across the warning area this morning, with the heaviest amounts across northwest and north central Indiana. Additional rainfall amounts of around 1/2 inch are expected this morning with locally higher amounts. The coverage of the heavier rain is expected to diminish this afternoon but scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue.

In addition to the periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, rising temperatures today will result in significant snow melt that will lead to additional runoff through this evening. Piles of snow continue to block many storm drainage areas across the area, which will exacerbate flood concerns across the area through Friday morning. There will be a heightened potential of flooding of low-lying areas, basements, small creeks and streams through Friday morning.

Some town that may experience flooding include Knox, Dunlap, Elkhart, Goshen, Nappanee, Simonton Lake, Granger, Gulivoire Park, Mishawaka, South Bend, LaPorte, Michigan City, Trail Creek, Westville, LaGrange, Kendallville, Ligonier, Bremen, Plymouth, Syracuse, Warsaw, Winona Lake, Benton Harbor, Benton Heights, Buchanan, Fair Plain, Niles, St. Joseph, Sturgis, Three Rivers, Dowagiac and Georgetown.

Precautionary/preparedness actions

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Turn around, don't drown!
