An Elkhart man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill in a double slaying at a convenience store last year.
Kevin Moore, 29, admitted in Elkhart Circuit Court this morning that he shot and killed Jagtar Singh Bhatti, 55, and Pawan Singh, 20, during a Sept. 5 robbery at Saleh’s Market, 401 Middlebury St.
The sentence will be left to the judge’s discretion. Moore faces a maximum term of 130 years.
Moore will begin his sentence with the Indiana Department of Mental Health. After staffers there determine that Moore’s mental health issues have been addressed, he will be transferred to the Indiana Department of Correction.
In court today, Moore indicated that at the time of the slayings he was impaired by post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
A co-defendant in the case, Richard Gross, 23, pleaded guilty to murder charges in December on the day his trial was due to begin.
