Independence Day will be filled with activities in Nappanee

NAPPANEE — A full day of family-friendly activities is planned for Independence Day in Nappanee with most activities taking place at Stauffer Park.

The fun will begin at 8 a.m. with a Big Cup Golf Tournament at McCormick Creek Golf Course and Junior Olympics, sponsored by Nappanee Rotary Club.

 At 9 a.m. a youth triathlon for children 9 to 13 will be held. Children must be registered and information will be available at the city pool.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. the NorthWood High School cheerleaders will provide face painting and have a bake sale.

At 11 a.m. the parade kicks off, starting at City Hall and ending at Stauffer Park.

From noon until 4 p.m. the pool will offer free swimming.

At 1 p.m. the popular Waterball contest, sponsored by the Nappanee Fire Department will take place.

At 2 p.m. the Tailgate Toss Tournament, sponsored by the Nappanee American Legion, will be held. Register at the Legion or day of the event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Singers, dancers, magicians — talented folks of all types and all ages are invited to enter Nappanee’s Got Talent, sponsored by Downie Auto Sales. Registration will be at the stage from 11:45 to 2:45 p.m. and the contest starts at 3 p.m.

At 5:45 p.m. a digital scavenger hunt will take place. Local residents are invited to form a team of up to five people. The team will need a digital camera. For information, call Rocki Stillson at 574-253-2869 or check out www.facebook.com/TheNappTownHuntDown.

From 6 p.m. to dark there will be entertainment on the stage and at 10 p.m. or dark, fireworks will light up the sky.

Food vendors will be available at the park all day. Horseshoe pits, a sand volleyball court and skate park will be available for use for those with their own equipment.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?
