UPDATE: Old Bag Factory reopened after 2-inch gas line struck

GOSHEN — A gas leak in Goshen forced the evacuation of two buildings Friday morning near Harrison Street and Chicago Avenue.

The Old Bag Factory was one of the two buildings evacuated.

According to Goshen Fire Cpt. Don Showalter, a construction crew doing roadwork at the intersection struck a 2-inch gas line.

Showalter said that typically when a 2-inch line is ruptured a Northern Indiana Public Service Co. crew from Gary must come to fix it.

“We’re planning on being here for a while,” he said.

In addition to the Old Bag Factory, a building and apartment at 609 N. Harrison St. were also evacuated, Showalter said.

Sharida Burkholder, owner of a salon inside the Old Bag Factory said that someone from the office came and told she had to leave because of the leak.

“Actually my appointments hadn’t started yet but I can always reschedule,” she said.

Burkholder said she was taking the interruption of her business in stride.

“Safety’s the first thing,” she said.

UPDATE:

Goshen Fire Department Pvt. Dan Bontrager said that the scene was clear and businesses would be able to reopen around 1:30 p.m. Friday. He said the leak was fixed and the department had left the scene
