Middlebury Riverfest to feature custom-painted rain barrels

MIDDLEBURY — The fourth annual Middlebury Riverfest, the celebration of fresh water for Middlebury, will feature an artistic way to conserve water.

Five custom-painted rain barrels will be auctioned off to promote the wise use of water, while providing beauty to a landscape. The rain barrels can be seen at Middlebury Third Fridays and the Middlebury Summer Festival under the Middlebury Parks booth at Memorial Park Aug. 9 and 10. These barrels are being auctioned through a silent bid auction which will end during the Riverfest on Aug. 17 at 1 p.m.

Rain barrels collect rain water after a storm and save it for a dry day. Rain barrels are most often connected to a downspout of a gutter system from a house or building. These barrels have all of the necessary attachments to be functional, and just need to be connected to a downspout.

Guggisberg Deutsch Kase Haus donated the raw barrels, which were sanded and primed by Middlebury park staff. The art work on the barrels were then painted by students from third-grade classes at Middlebury and Orchardview Elementary, and Northridge High School. Finally Bill’s Collision Service applied a professional clear coat for durability.

With the downspout conversion kit, paint and clear coat, these barrels are valued at more than $85.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Middlebury Riverfest planning committee and the Middlebury Parks public programming fund.

The Riverfest celebration is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at Middlebury’s Riverbend Park. There is no charge to attend Riverfest.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
