Antique lovers roam Shipshe

SHIPSHEWANA — It was the bargain of the day.

Barbara Grace of Dowagiac held up the white antique comb with a silver edge.

She made her discovery during the Shipshewana Antique Show Saturday.

“The comb is practical and I will use it because it strikes my fancy,” Grace said, smiling. “I got a deal on it. She (the dealer) gave it to me for half-off and I got it for a dollar.”

Grace attended the festival with her three friends and they each had a two-dollar bill for a $2 budget.

“We have to find something within our budget and see who gets the best deal. We keep it a secret until we eat lunch later,” Grace said. “It makes it fun looking for that bargain. This is our second time coming to the ‘Antique Market’ excursion for our girls day out.”

Booths and booths of antiques were on display for the festival-goers to find that special item to take home.

There were old sewing machines, tools, signs, books, furniture, toys, quilts, dishes and glassware to name a few things.

Daisy and Marvin Redfield of Marshall, Mich., were busy with customers at their booth.

“It took us five hours to set up yesterday (Friday) and we’re hoping to only take a couple hours to put it all away,” Marvin said. “So far, it’s been a good day.”

His wife has a permanent booth at the Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market.

“I’ve been doing the flea market for 20 years and save the better stuff for the Antique Show,” Daisy said. “It’s gone good, it’s a beautiful day and no rain. There are lots of people and it makes a nice crowd.”

Sisters Clara and Pauline Nicolay were visiting the area with their family from Germany, they said.

“We wanted to see the area with Amish and then we saw the Antique Show,” Clara said. “We’re just looking. There are many cool things, like the clocks.”

Pauline said she enjoyed looking at the books.

“There are lots of old books, even old German books,” Pauline said, smiling. “There are many things.”

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
