ELKHART COUNTY FAIR: New Paris teen wins Beef Club competition

GOSHEN — In a crowded show arena Monday night, Mya Lorenz heard her name announced.

“I just didn’t even know what to think,” the seven-year 4-H member from New Paris said shortly afterward. “I’m still like numb. I was really excited, though. He showed really good for me.”

“He” is a crossbred steer, Lorenz’s grand champion animal in 4-H Beef Club competition at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. Lorenz has experienced success with the club before. A couple years ago, she had the grand champion heifer at the show.

Lorenz's steer was a winner this week, but the animal isn’t her sole focus. She also shows pigs and lamb.

Lane Flowers of Nappanee had the reserve champion steer with his Hereford.

“Usually it’s very uncommon for Herefords to get such a high place like this at a very competitive fair,” Flowers said. “...It’s very moving right now.”

Sam Burtsfield of Benton had the grand champion heifer at the show, and Liz Beer of Milford had the reserve grand champion heifer.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
