Police seek alleged child molester

GOSHEN — Elkhart County police are asking for the public’s help in finding a man accused of child molestation.

Police are seeking Scott Edward Culver, 50. He is described as a white male approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 165 pounds. According to a posting on the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, Culver was last known to live in Goshen. However, there is a warrant out for Culver’s arrest and he may have left the state.

Police began investigating Culver’s alleged misconduct in April 2013, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Elkhart Superior Court 3. The reported victim in the case is a girl who was 11 years old at the time.

According to the affidavit, the girl’s mother told police that she’d spoken to a man claiming to be the father of “Sarah,” a child her daughter had been spending much time with, including the weekend of April 12, 2013.

The mother said that on April 13, 2013, she went shopping and saw her daughter leaving a Dollar General store with a red-headed, freckle-faced man appearing to be in his late 40s. She yelled for her daughter to come to her. The man with the girl ran to an older blue sport-utility vehicle and left the parking lot.

The child subsequently told her mother there was no “Sarah” and that she had been going to see her boyfriend Scott, the man who fled the parking lot. The girl told her mother she was in love with Scott and that they had been having sexual intercourse, the affidavit reads. The child said she’d met the man at the King Arthur’s video game arcade, where he lived in the back room.

According to the affidavit, the girl also told police investigators that she’d had sex with Culver. In addition, the child said she’d told Culver she was 16 years old.

Culver was also interviewed by police, the affidavit reads. He reportedly said he and the girl were in a “romantic relationship.” According to the court document, Culver also told police the child had assured him she was 17 years old.

The girl underwent a medical examination. Investigators reviewed her cell phone, which revealed sexually explicit text messages. Police said other text messages indicated the child had been consuming alcoholic beverages at the arcade.

According to the affidavit, police also spoke to a then-12-year-old girl identifying herself as the alleged victim’s best friend. The 12-year-old said she was the one who introduced the other child to Culver. She also said Culver was aware of where she went to school and that she was in the sixth grade.

The 12-year-old told police she’d heard her friend lie to Culver about her age, the affidavit reads, “and (Culver) never seemed to question why her best friend would be several years older than her.”

Culver is wanted on charges including child molesting, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and child solicitation.

Police said that anyone with information about Culver’s location can contact police by calling 574-533-4151, or by clicking on the “Submit a Tip” button located at the top of the sheriff’s department Facebook page.
