SERVICE TIMES UPDATED: Goshen boy's death ruled accident

GOSHEN — An 11-year-old Goshen boy’s death has been ruled an accident.

Sunday at 7:50 p.m. Elkhart County police were called to 17643 Bentwood Drive, Goshen on a report of a boy not breathing.

Police said Jeremy Gallegos, 11, was found by his 18-yar-old brother Hector in the home’s basement.

“It was an accidental death due to a ligature that became entwined around his neck,” said Elkhart County Coroner John White shortly after the autopsy Monday. “But it was not a suicide and obviously not a homicide.”

White said nobody knows exactly what Gallegos had been doing to get himself tangled. He said the family described him as a bright, inquisitive boy who liked to experiment with things, including things he saw on TV. White said Gallegos had been watching cartoons at the time of the accident.

“We really don’t know because it wasn’t witnessed,” White said of what led up to the death.

Gallegos was a fifth-grader at Prairie View Elementary School. Goshen schools Superintendent Diane Woodworth said, "We are grieving with the family for the loss of their beloved child. He was a very polite, delightful student and we are all so saddened by the loss."

Gallegos' funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Waterford Mennonite Church. Friends may call at Comunidad Cristiana Adulam, 19938 C.R. 38, from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
