THE GOSHEN NEWS

GOSHEN — As many as five people were injured Monday night when a steel-framed batting net fell during a recreational volleyball game at the Roman Gingerich Fitness Center on the campus of Goshen College, according to witnesses at the scene.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. Witnesses told a Goshen News reporter that one of two batting nets that was suspended above the gym floor fell from the ceiling. The fall, they said, was partially broken by a volleyball net, but not before striking people who were sitting in the bleachers

At least two people were transported from the fitness center by ambulance. The severity of their injuries are unclear at this time. According to witnesses, one woman was knocked unconscious for several minutes as a result of the fall. Others at the scene with minor injuries refused professional medical attention.

Onlookers say cables holding the batting net broke one by one. Four broken cables can be seen dangling from supports at the fitness center. The volleyball event was a high school league that plays twice a week at GC.
