Topeka man killed in farm mishap

MILLERSBURG — A Topeka man was killed in a farm-related mishap Monday morning, according to staff at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home.

John M. Bontrager, 71, died at 11:13 a.m. after being struck by a wagon being pulled by runaway horses. LaGrange County Coroner Jeff Helmuth said the incident occurred at a farm at 5495 S. 1125 West, Millersburg.

Helmuth said something spooked the horses and Bontrager grabbed the reins trying to regain control of the animals. He ended up being dragged and was run over by the horse-drawn wagon. Helmuth said the cause of Bontrager’s death was blunt-force trauma.

Bontrager was a farmer and a member of the Old Order Amish Church. His obituary will appear online at www.goshennews.com and in Wednesday’s edition of The Goshen News.
