STEUBEN COUNTY —
A Middlebury man was pulled from a burning vehicle after a crash in Steuben County Wednesday.
Steuben County police said the crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Bayview Road and the area of Lane 310 Lake James. According to police, Luke Fenwick, 31, Middlebury was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that went off the south side of the road and struck a large tree.
Steuben County residents Larry Bassett and Bryan Sorgen arrived at the accident scene a short time after the crash. Police said that both Bassett and Sorgen exited their vehicles to assist Fenwick, who was still in the Monte Carlo.
Sorgen, an off-duty Fort Wayne firefighter, broke a window in the vehicle to gain access to the driver. Police said that while assisting Fenwick, who appeared to be stuck, Bassett and Sorgen noticed that the temperature in the vehicle was rising.
At this point, Bassett and Sorgen began to pull Fenwick from the vehicle. Fire broke out in the engine compartment. Police said Fenwick was pulled to safety, and the actions of Bassett and Sorgen most likely prevented more serious injuries and possibly saved Fenwick’s life.
Fenwick was transported to Parkview Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
