Officers in Elkhart police shooting identified

THE GOSHEN NEWS

— The names of the three Elkhart city police officers who were involved in a fatal shooting at 8 p.m. Sunday have been released along with the name of the man killed.

Elkhart police identified the officers in the shooting as Jason Ray, Jason Gruber and Daniel Mayer.

According to ISP investigators, Elkhart police officers attempted to stop a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Christopher James Ryckeart, 31, Elkhart, for a traffic violation in the 400 block of Marion Street in Elkhart. The truck was also reported stolen, according to a press release.

The driver of the truck, Ryckeart, refused to stop for police and led officers from several departments on a chase that lasted more than 40 minutes, ISP investigators said. The pursuit went into Michigan before returning to Elkhart and ended with the driver being shot behind a house in the area of Fourth and Marion streets. Ryckeart allegedly backed his truck into the path of officers as they attempted to place him in custody after a vehicle pursuit, state police said.

The three Elkhart officers discharged their guns at Ryckeart, state police said. The driver died as a result of the gunfire.

State police detectives interviewed witnesses and collected evidence at the scene Sunday night. No officers were injured in the shooting.
