Youngsters build with Legos at Goshen library

GOSHEN — The Goshen Public Library staff hosted an event that got about two dozen children building with their imaginations Tuesday.

Children brought in their Legos and were split into two groups by age — 6 and younger and 7-12. The groups had 10 to 15 minutes to build a vehicle.

Then the children voted on their peers’ work and three finalists from each group were chosen.

Those three were given random Lego pieces and the same time restrictions to build anything they could. The children then voted for their favorites and first, second and third places were awarded.

According to Margret Kownover of the library’s children’s department, the program was thought of following a popular presenter at the library’s summer reading program.

“We had a presenter come for the summer reading program,” she said. “He did a Lego program where they built a droid that walked. The response was overwhelming so we knew that kids really loved Legos.”

Kownover said it was important that the judging be left to the kids to make it more fun for them.

“We thought the best thing would be where they could get together and build and then have the kids judge for themselves,” Kownover said. “Not have the librarians choose or the parents, but the kids themselves pick their favorites and see what other kids are doing.”

Winners were given choice of brand new Lego books that had building ideas and other Lego-related ideas and creations. All participants received a coupon booklet.
