YOU SHOULD KNOW: This dog gets the Moody blues

GOSHEN — Tipper has separation anxiety and doesn’t like to be out of sight from her owner, Pauline Moody.

So Tipper even goes to church at Family Worship Center at the Lighthouse in Goshen and sits beside Moody during the two-hour worship service each week.

“We have individual chairs so I put a blanket on the chair beside me and she settles down. I never hear a peep out of her and sometimes I have to take her outside in between,” Moody said. “People do a double take at times. The children love to pet her, but it confuses her. She’s not used to children.”

Moody has been a pet owner for about nine years after getting Tipper from her son.

“She got into so many things. They didn’t want her and if I had known she would tie me down so much, I might not have taken her,” she said, with a laugh. “She’s an excellent little dog and she’s been wonderful for me.”

As a puppy, Tipper had a buddy.

“She was raised with George, the cat — a big, yellow tabby that weighed about 20 pounds,” the owner said. “They played together, licked each other and cuddled together.”

Moody has lived at Greencroft Communities for five years and that’s when Tipper, a purebred cocker spaniel, developed the separation anxiety.

“I was working for four hours one day after moving in and she barked and cried the whole time,” Moody said. “It was in September and the windows were open. I could hear a dog barking and sure enough it was her. I haven’t left her alone since then and I have to brave all sorts of weather for her.”

Tipper turned 12 Friday and her owner didn’t do anything special for her birthday, she said, because Tipper gets dog treats everyday and likes to be sneaky about getting “people” food.

“She’s a tricky one. If you leave food on a chair, it’ll be gone,” Moody said, smiling. “I found that out the hard way a couple times. She ate my dinner. I don’t do that anymore.”

The dog likes candy bars and carrots, but “they seem to bother her stomach,” she said. “Tipper is getting older and I think she has a hearing problem now.”

One of Moody’s friends got Tipper a brown bomber jacket and a sweater to wear for inclement weather and doesn’t mind wearing them. But she doesn’t like going to the groomer, at all.

“She shakes like a leaf the whole time,” Moody said. “My dog has been a great joy and I love dogs. She is it! There will be no more (dogs).”
