Mark Elliott leading Goshen News ad team

GOSHEN — It’s been a month since Mark Elliott was named advertising director for The Goshen News.

“I like this market in Goshen, Elkhart and South Bend. It’s a healthy economy,” Elliott said. “It’s so diverse with sales people and customers. It’s been interesting getting to know the Amish community.”

He said he’s worked as an advertising director for The Baxter Bulletin in Mountain Home, Ark.; the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass.; the Brattleboro Reformer in Brattleboro, Vt.; and was a digital and classified advertising manager for Foster’s Daily Democrat in Dover, N. H.

Elliott says each area where he’s worked and lived with his family has its own beauty and characteristics.

Helping businesses

What does he enjoy about his new position?

“I like the ability to help local and regional businesses with marketing. It’s not just newspapers that have gone through changes, the businesses have gone through changes,” he said. “Along with the Internet, the face of retail has changed. The big box stores have developed and I like to help the smaller businesses build up their profitability and that’s what we can help them with in the newspaper.”

He says The News can help businesses target their customers and reach them with “our products” like ads and inserts.

“There are multiple layers in the paper and online. People look at content and bring that content to our advertisers,” Elliott said.

In light of today’s economy, advertising presents more of an opportunity than a challenge and it’s much more versatile. He noted there were more than 80,000 visitors to The News’ website and with 10,000 subscribers in the newspaper’s circulation, it means they are able to deliver hundreds of thousands of impressions (advertising).

“No other media can boast of getting money back and we still have a traditional strong readership and continuity with the community,” he said. “People haven’t stopped getting the news. Newspapers are still a viable media with credibility in advertising and you can trust the advertising.”

Family

His family includes his wife, Janice, who’s an independent artist, and his two daughters, Samantha and Leigh, college graduates and currently live in Boston.

“The newspaper business has provided a good living for me and I’ve been able to send my kids to college,” he said.

His job as an advertising director doesn’t leave a lot of free time, but he enjoys fitness and running. During the weekends, he spends time hiking with his wife and doing stuff outdoors as much as possible.
