Pipes burst after burglar leaves door open

ELKHART — A burglar broke into an Elkhart business, stole several items and then didn't bother to close the door. The extreme cold caused water pipes to burst.

The burglary happened at Auto Glow, 30065 Old U.S. 20 between Monday and Wednesday morning, Elkhart County Sheriff's deputies reported.

Someone broke two windows in the overhead door to gain entry into the business. Three buffers and an ozone machine were stolen, police said. The burglar left, and did not close the overhead door. Because of the subzero temperatures the water pipes burst and the water meter, extractor, washer and power washer all froze and broke. There was at least three feet of water on the floor.
